Fort Drum community members participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of Pvt. Rino Carlutti, the lone Italian soldier buried at the POW (Prisoner of War) Cemetery, to coincide with Italy’s National Unity Day and Armed Forces Day on Nov. 4. Adjacent to Sheepfold Cemetery, the POW Cemetery is also the burial site for six German POWs. It is believed that the German and Italian graves were separated by some distance as the Germans refused to be buried alongside the Italian soldiers. At the time, Italy had already surrendered and the Germans had occupied Italy. (Photo by Mike Strasser, Fort Drum Garrison Public Affairs)
