U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Brian P. McKeon receives an Operation Allies Welcome overview brief at Camp Atterbury, Ind., Dec. 1, 2021. Tours like this afford delegations from the Department of State opportunities to visit facilities and engage with a broad range of inter-agency partners supporting Afghan guest resettlement efforts across the country. This initiative provides essential support at secure locations outside of Afghanistan. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
