U.S. Marine Corps Col. Chris Rodatz (ret.), platoon commander, Company D, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, reads the citation during an award ceremony held for Lance Cpl. Karl A. Tober (ret.) and Pfc. Robert McNally (ret.), infantrymen with Company D at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Triangle, Virginia, Nov. 30, 2021. Tober and McNally (posthumously) were awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor for their combat actions against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on Feb. 18, 1969. “These awards are long overdue, these men should have been awarded 50 years ago.” said Rodatz. “I wrote them up for a Bronze Star with “V” device while I was there, but the paperwork got lost when Nixon pulled us out…the Marines were never awarded the Medal”. “After I reconnected with them and they told me they never received their medal, I knew I had to rewrite them up for the award again; it was the right thing to do,” said Rodatz. It took Rodatz two years to get the paperwork in order and for the awards to be approved. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. D’Angelo Yanez)
