Members of the 陸上自衛隊 Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Middle Army, along with Soldiers from 25th Infantry Division, 5th Security Force Assistance Brigade - SFAB and U.S. Army Japan, participated in the Yama Sakura 81 opening ceremony at Camp Itami on Dec. 5. The ceremony kicks-off the 40th iteration of Yama Sakura, and opening remarks were given by Lt. Gen Xavier T. Brunson, I Corps commanding general, and Lt. Gen. Shin Nozawa, JGSDF MA commanding general.
Also in attendance were Mr. Richard Mei, 在大阪・神戸米国総領事館 Consul General, Maj. Gen. JB Vowell, U.S. Army Japan commanding general, and Col. Jeffrey A VanAntwerp, 25th Infantry Division deputy commanding general for operations.
Following the opening ceremony Nozawa and Vowell conducted a bilateral press conference to give the national media an overview of the exercise.
Yama Sakura 81 is the largest U.S.-Japan bilateral and joint command post exercise which enables participants to work as dedicated partners in support of the U.S.-Japan security alliance and for continued peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. This year's exercise commemorates the 40th anniversary of Yama Sakura.
