In late-August 2021, President Biden directed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to lead the whole-of-government effort to assist Afghans who supported the U.S. as they resettle through Operation Allies Welcome. Camp Atterbury, Ind., is among eight installations designated as safe havens for evacuees since September. This initiative provides essential support at secure locations outside of Afghanistan. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities in permanent or temporary structures as quickly as possible.
