GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— U.S. Army 1st Lt. Karl Berkemeier, an emergency room nurse assigned to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, makes a phone call to arrange a transfer of a patient to another hospital at Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dec. 13, 2021. Sending patients to different hospitals keeps the emergency room clear to receive more patients. Berkemeier is part of a medical response team that is deployed in support of the continued Department of Defense COVID response operations to help communities in need.
