U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Gerardo Hernandez, an infantry Marine with Battalion Landing Team 1/5, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), patrols through the jungle during a zone reconnaissance for MEU exercise (MEUEX) at Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, Dec. 16, 2021. The Light Armored Reconnaissance platoon conducted a zone reconnaissance to secure the area for a potential Forward Arming and Refueling Point for MEUEX. MEUEX is a pre-deployment training exercise that validates and reinforces the MEU's mission capabilities across all of the Marine subordinate elements. 31st MEU, the Marine Corps' only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premier crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
