U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Alexis N. Ortega, a drill instructor with Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, poses for a photo during the crucible on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Jan. 5, 2022. Ortega became a drill instructor at Parris Island, S.C. in 2015. After her tour was completed, she returned as a drill instructor once again in 2021 to be a part of recruit training on the west coast. Although the process of civilians transforming into Marines remains equal on both ends of the United States, Ortega has learned to adapt to the geographical differences in both training centers. Ortega takes great pride in being one of the first female drill instructors in 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, however, she expressed that being a key part in molding the future of the Marine Corps is the greatest honor she has been given.
