Marines with 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, conduct pistol qualification with the M17 Modular Handgun System at Fort Pickett, Virginia on Jan. 13, 2022. The M17 is a striker-fired, semi-automatic, 9-mm pistol and the predecessor of the M18 Modular Handgun System. Marines completed the training alongside Soldiers from the 919th Military Police Company of the New Mexico National Guard. The Department of Defense, through the U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
