From left to right, Sgt. Xavier Lewis, a wheeled vehicle mechanic, Sgt. Samuel Eseyin, a power-generation specialist, and Pfc. Nana Gyasi, a construction equipment repairer, all assigned to Headquarters Support Company, 46th Aviation Support Battalion, 16th Combat Aviation Brigade, pose for a photo at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., Jan. 10, 2022. The Soldiers recreated a historic photo of Red Ball Express truck drivers Tech. Sgt. Serman Hughes, Tech. Sgt. Hudson Murphy, and Pfc. Zacariah Gibbs during World War II. The Red Ball Express was a truck convoy system made predominantly of Black drivers from the Army Quartermaster Corps who served as the supply route of Patton’s Third Army. The men carried critical supplies inland from St. Lô, France, to 28 American divisions that had broken through the beaches of Normandy and were racing across Western Europe in pursuit of retreating German forces.
