U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Fidel Chidandali and Pfc. Ushindi Phanuel, stand with their family while living in Africa in the mid 1990s. Chidandali and Phanuel’s family lived as refugees for many years in Kenya, after escaping civil unrest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As a teenager, Chidandali decided he wanted to become a United States Marine after his first encounter with a Marine Corps Security Guard at the U.S. Embassy in Kenya. (Courtesy photo by Staff Sgt.
