A polar bear stands on its hind legs to get a better view while on the sea ice near the community of Utqiagvik, formerly known as Barrow. The elusive creature made an appearance during a visit by Jaime Pinkham, principal deputy assistant secretary of the Army for civil works, on Feb. 23. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Alaska District has received funding for the construction of a project that will reduce the risk of storm damage along the town’s coastline.
