U.S. Marine Corps Col. Christopher Bopp, the commanding officer of Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Blaz, left, speaks with U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Kirk E. Gibbs, commander and division engineer for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pacific Ocean Division, as they view the names of previous commanding officers of Marine Barracks Guam, presently known as MCB Camp Blaz, March 17, 2022. The Marine Barracks was officially established at the village of Sumay, Guam, in 1901. In October 2018, the Secretary of the Navy approved the recommendation of the Commandant of the Marine Corps, that the new Marine Corps installation on Guam be named in honor of the late Brig. Gen. Vicente "Ben" Tomas Garrido Blaz. He was the first minority general officer in the Marine Corps and remains the highest ranking indigenous CHamoru to have served in the Marine Corps.
