Members of the West Virginia National Guard conduct a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear (CBRN) training exercise with members of the Qatar Weapons of Mass Destruction Unit and Qatar Military Medical Service in Charleston, West Virginia, March 27, 2022. The exercise was the cumulating event wrapping up three weeks of intense CBRN training as the Qatari Armed Forces prepare to support the FIFA 2022 World Cup soccer tournament to be held later this year in Qatar. The exercise simulated a chemical attack at a large outdoor stadium and was supported by the West Virginia Emergency Management Agency, various local first responder agencies including Charleston Fire, South Charleston Fire, Clendenin Fire Rescue, and exercise role players with DuPont and the University of Charleston men’s and women’s soccer programs. The West Virginia National Guard and Qatar have been partners through the National Guard Bureau’s State Partnership Program since 2018 and work closely to build international military and diplomatic cooperation and to develop and expand defense capabilities.
