1st Lieutenant Thomas J. Chiminello died on 29 October 1967 when his aircraft crashed during inclement weather attempting to evacuate a critically wounded soldier during an Aeromedical evacuation mission, Tay Ninh Province, Vietnam.
1LT Thomas James Chiminello, from San Antonio, Texas, was 24 years old on October 29, 1967. Aboard the Huey with him were his copilot, 21-year-old Warrant Officer Forrest De Vere Rains, Jr., from Columbia, South Carolina; crew chief Specialist 5 Lawrence Lano, a 21-year-old from Portland, Maine; and the onboard medic, Specialist 5 Herbert C. Donaldson, Jr., who was also 21 years old.
Chiminello and his crew, were attached to the 57th Medical Detachment, 68th Medical Group, 44th Medical Brigade.
