U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Jack Keane, right, then XVIII Airborne Corps commanding general, hands Maj. Gen. Joseph DeFrancisco, then the commanding general of the newly reflagged 3rd Infantry Division, the unit’s official colors on Fort Stewart, Georgia, April 26, 1996. DeFrancisco became the first commander of the 3rd ID on Fort Stewart after the unit spent the most of the Cold War stationed in West Germany.
