Matthew Schrader, a coastal engineer and planner with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Jacksonville District points down at the perfect wave-like pattern that forms around the base of the dune that was created by the wind, Atlantic Beach, Jacksonville, Fl. Sand dunes provide natural coastal protection against storm surge and high waves, preventing or reducing coastal flooding and structural damage, as well as providing important ecological habitat. For nearly 250 years, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has dedicated its service to not just better understanding the environment, but also to finding ways to protect it. Now, with the development and ongoing expansion of the Engineering With NatureĀ® initiative, USACE is focused on working WITH nature. (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Photo by Brigida I. Sanchez)
