Alicia Rudnik, spouse of Staff Sgt. Sean Rudnik, is a Family Readiness Group volunteer in the 28th Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade. During Volunteer Appreciation Month we salute her for her contributions and sacrifice.
"I volunteered to begin serving with the FRG because we have so many opportunities that many often don’t even realize exist. Being able to interact with other families going through the same things is another reason. Being a part of the military community in an area that doesn’t have a full-fledged post can sometimes make it difficult to encounter others who understand the struggles and joys of a military family.
The most rewarding part of serving with the FRG is the opportunity to connect with other families. We have a very distinct dynamic within our families, in that we deal with drill weekends, extended training and deployments. While those outside of the community are able to support us, so many will never understand that dynamic. That’s why being able to connect with other families that also have children around the same ages as ours makes a huge difference for our family.
The thing I would drive home about serving with the FRG would be all of the connections that can be made with others. It’s so rewarding to see families growing together and learning together. The ability to help support others going through similar situations is a benefit that really can’t be put into words."
