Fourth-grade students from three Nebraska Elementary schools – Seward Elementary, St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School and St. John Lutheran School – join together with community organizations and leaders for the Arbor Day 2022 City of Seward Celebration at the Nebraska National Guard Museum, April 29, 2022. This year celebrates the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day. Sponsored by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs – Seward, and the Seward Tree Board, the event included city leadership remarks, a special presentation by State Senator Mark Kolterman, award presentations and “Tribute to Trees” entertainment by the students. The Arbor Day celebration concluded with the planting of two trees – a red oak and a burr oak – donated in memory and honor of twin brother Deroyce and Aloyce Volzke, both U.S. Army veterans, lifelong residents of Seward County and committed conservationists. The tree planters included the honored dignitaries, representatives from each of the fourth grade classes present, and Volzke family members. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Staff Sgt.
