220428-DC740-N-1085 SAN DIEGO (April 28, 2022) Amanda Toman, Acting Principal Director for 5G, Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, left, views a demonstration at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the 5G-enabled Smart Warehouse. “5G has the potential to affect all aspects of the Department of Defense from front-line warfighting to back-end logistics,” said Toman. The Smart Warehouse project focuses on trans-shipment between shore facilities and naval units to increase the efficiency and fidelity of naval logistic operations, including identification, recording, organization, storage, retrieval, and transportation of material and supplies. The project also serves as a proving ground for testing, refining, and validating emerging 5G-enabled technologies. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class John B. Hetherington)
