U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Mason D. Avers, military working dog handler, Provost Marshal Office, Security Battalion, assists in training military working dog Peti in locating different kinds of narcotics on Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, April 27, 2022. As a part of in-processing, military working dogs are introduced to any unfamiliar narcotics and imprinted on the scent. This is done by letting the dogs pick up on the scent and then hiding the scent cans in different portions of the room; dogs are rewarded for alerting their handler when they smell the correct narcotic.
