General Water Directorate workers clear debris in the early stages of rehabilitation of Shaddadi Desalination Plant. To improve access to clean water in northeast Syria, USAID supported the rehabilitation of key pieces of public water infrastructure like the Shaddadi Desalination Plant. Due to the high salt content of the groundwater in the Shaddadi area, desalination is required to make the water drinkable. The plant was damaged and in disrepair due to years of conflict in the area. Working in partnership with the General Water Directorate of Hasakah governorate, USAID’s rehabilitation of the plant provides more reliable access to water for Shaddadi’s 9,000 residents at significantly lower costs than water trucking.
