Col. Christopher G. Batterton, 192nd Wing commander, presents the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal to Senior Master Sgt. William L. Nearhood, 192nd Wing superintendent of the advanced programs office, during Nearhood's retirement ceremony on May 15, 2022, at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. In 1985, Nearhood began his military career when he enlisted into the Navy then transferred to the Virginia Air National Guard in 1997 where he finished his nearly 37 year military career. Nearhood was recognized with this medal for his efforts from Feb. 18, 2010 to May 1, 2022, during his role as the senior enlisted leader of the 1st Fighter Wing and 192nd Wing's total force integrated advanced programs office.
