ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY. The actions of 7th Infantry Division's Pvt. Joseph Pantillion Martinez, May 26, 1943 on Attu in the Aleutian Island Chain during World War II, earned him the Medal of Honor. This was the first Medal of Honor awarded to a U.S. Army Hispanic American in WW II was also the first awarded for actions on the North American continent since 1898.
