SAN DIEGO (May 30, 2022) – Sailors fire an MK 11 saluting mount during a 21-gun salute in observance of Memorial Day aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), May 30. The 21 gun salute is performed to pay honor at military funerals, to recognize presidents and former presidents, heads of state, and in commemoration of national holidays like Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and on George Washington’s birthday.
