U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Mac Jarvis, left, firefighter, 386th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department, gets his blood pressure checked by Staff Sgt. Chalmer M. Gross, medical technician, 386th Expeditionary Medical Group, after Jarvis was in a hazardous material training suit at Fire Station 2 at Ali Al Salem Air Base, Kuwait, May 22, 2022. Gross checked Jarvis’ heart rate and pulse oximetry to monitor his body reaction to the heat and workload; to make sure he was safe and healthy enough to proceed to the next scenario; and to catch signs of heat illness or dehydration early. The 386th ECES Fire Department conducted a certification evaluation for hazardous materials incident commanders and technicians on base. The hands-on portion of the certification consisted of three simulated scenarios: stopping a one-ton container, typically used for storage, from leaking chlorine from its fusible plugs; the transportation of hazardous materials by rail; and bolting down an unstable cylinder, which contained nitrogen.
