Staff Sgt. Codey Johnson, a squad leader and combat engineer with the 833rd Engineer Company out of Ottumwa, Iowa, transports Soldiers from the demolition pit, where they set explosive charges, to a designated area that is a safe distance away from the explosion. Johnson, who has served in the Iowa National Guard for 15 years and deployed twice to Afghanistan, said the best way to describe combat engineers is, “infantry with explosives.” (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Sgt. 1st Class Christie R.
