Mount Morris Dam Natural Resource Specialists, Juliana Smith and Steve Winslow performed a patrol through a segment of the Letchworth Gorge via kayak to visually inspect federal property for signs of trespass, encroachment, or environmental degradation at Letchworth State Park., NY., June 8, 2022. During the patrol, Smith and Winslow were able to positively identify two plants that are NYS endangered or threatened species including butterwort (pinguicula vulgaris L.), and yellow mountain saxifrage (saxifrage aizoides). These plants only live on perennially seepy cliffs and ledges which USACE property within the Letchworth Gorge provides. Monitoring the health of "special status species" habitat is part of the environmental stewardship mission at the Mount Morris Dam, and a particularly rewarding part of the job for park rangers and natural resource specialists.
