Residents and 1st Infantry Division Soldiers pay homage to Independence Day during The Big Red One Vietnam War Remembrance Ceremony on July 4th, 2022, at the Vietnam Veteran’s Monument in Heritage Park, Junction City, KS. The wreath-laying ceremony allowed attendees to reflect on the sacrifices made by the 1st Infantry Division during the Vietnam War, particularly the actions taken during Operation Junction City in 1967. 1st Infantry Division Deputy Commanding General-Support, U. S. Army Brig. Gen. Niave F. Knell, spoke during the ceremony on the significance of the 1ID's involvement during the war and reminded those in attendance that freedom comes at a cost. "One only needs to look behind me to see the names of 753 men and women who pledged their lives," said Knell. "Each name has a story, a loved one left behind, and a future willingly sacrificed to secure our very freedom. The wreath laid on the Vietnam memorial today pays thanks to all the proud veterans who have protected this idea through service to our great nation." (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt.
