During the ceremony, Gingrich relinquished command of the 39th ABW to France, who then charged Powell with leading the wing. The 39th ABW is charged with defending NATO’s southern flank under the auspices of 3rd AF, U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa and U.S. European Command.
