NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (June 30, 2022) – Capt. Brent C. Gaut, from Stockton, California, center, the commanding officer of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), and executive officer Capt. William M. Matthis from Houston, Texas, left cut a cake with Sailors assigned to the ship during the celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the ship in the aft mess decks. George Washington is undergoing refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipyard. RCOH is a multi-year project performed only once during a carrier’s 50-year service life that includes refueling the ship’s two nuclear reactors, as well as significant repairs, upgrades, and modernization.
