U.S. Army Air Corps African American “Fighting Engineers” at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, are shown in a World War II-era photograph. These expeditionary service members built and sustained airfields needed to advance Allied airpower from the shores of the continental United States to Tokyo and Berlin by the end of WWII. A heritage marker installed by the 6th Civil Engineer Squadron June 24, 2022, identifies the location of the “Black Troops” service area on MacDill AFB at the current Army and Air Force Exchange Service Main Exchange Mall Building 925A. The heritage marker is one of twelve markers on MacDill AFB and South Tampa where base personnel can learn more about all eras of base history. (U.S. Air Force photo)
