Lt. Cmdr. Michael Tapia, Environmental Physiology department head for the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory, sits inside a Fluctuating Altitude Simulation Technology chamber July 15in the Naval Medical Research Unit – Dayton’s fabrication section. The two-person FAST chamber, capable of subjecting occupants to rapid pressure fluctuations, was ready to be disposed of by the Navy’s Experimental Dive Unit in Panama City, Fla., but Tapia and the NAMRU-D arranged to have the device shipped here for future research studies.
