Sherman makes remarks during a ceremony commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Guadalcanal at the Guadalcanal American Memorial in the Solomon Islands, Aug. 7, 2022. Military leaders and heads of state from the U.S. and its partner nations honored those who died in the battle and reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a strong relationship with the Solomon Islands and other partner nations to ensure peace in the Indo-Pacific region. Sherman's father, Malcolm Sherman, was one of the thousands of Marines who fought in the battle and was wounded in action.
