A common goldeneye hen flies along the Chena River on July 28 at the Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project in North Pole, Alaska. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Alaska District partners with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to provide nest boxes for the birds and study their ecology. College students measure, weigh and band the adult hens and web tag their ducklings under the program, which provides them with a valuable training experience in waterfowl ecology, leadership and decision making.
