Capt. Brent C. Gaut, from Stockton, California, commanding officer of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), gifts a flag that was flown on the ship in honor of Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association to Doug Bradburn, chief executive officer of the organization, at Mount Vernon, Virginia, Sept. 14, 2022. Recipients of the George Washington Spirit of Freedom and Sailor of the Quarter awards were invited to Mount Vernon for a tour of the residency. George Washington is undergoing refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipyard. RCOH is a multi-year project performed only once during a carrier’s 50-year service life that includes refueling the ship’s two nuclear reactors, as well as significant repairs, upgrades, and modernization.
