U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Eli Smith, a squad leader with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, in support of Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force UNITAS LXIII, leads his squad while conducting a range training event with Brazilian marines during exercise UNITAS LXIII in Marambaia, Brazil, Sept. 9, 2022. The training event consisted of several squad tactics including maneuver under fire and machine gun suppression drills. UNITAS, which is Latin for “unity,” was conceived in 1959 and has taken place annually since first conducted in 1960. This year marks the 63rd iteration of the world’s longest-running annual multi-national maritime exercise. Additionally, this year Brazil celebrated its bicentennial, a historical milestone commemorating 200 years of the country’s independence. Smith is a native of Toledo, Ohio.
