UNITAS 2022: Night Operations - The Calm Before the Storm

A UH-1Y, “Venom,” from Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron (HMLA) 773 rests upon the flight deck of the amphibious transport dock ship USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) on the evening prior to the culminating amphibious raid of UNITAS LXIII, off the coast of Brazil, Sept. 15, 2022. The amphibious raid is the final joint, and combined, training evolution of UNITAS LXIII where Marines and Navy personnel from 19 different countries combine their collective resources to conduct a ship-to-shore operation to seize a known objective. The UH-1Ys will serve as close air support platforms during the raid to support the troops on the ground with reconnaissance and suppressive fires from above. The culminating event celebrates the combined efforts of detailed planning, preparation, and coordination amongst the partnered nations and illustrates the ethos of UNITAS. UNITAS, Latin for 'unity' is the world's longest-running annual multinational maritime exercise that, this year, brought together forces from 19 countries to include Brazil, Cameroon, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, Guyana, Jamaica, Mexico, Namibia, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Uruguay. The exercise focuses on enhancing interoperability among multiple nations and joint forces during littoral and amphibious operations in order to build on existing regional partnerships and create new enduring relationships that promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the U.S. Southern Command’s area of responsibility.
