Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Martha Kester smiles during a Passing of the Stole Ceremony at Joint Force Headquarters in Johnston, Iowa, on Oct. 22, 2022. Kester, alongside Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Heather Simon, have made history together by becoming the first women to serve as State Chaplains, both in their states and in the country. Kester will serve the Iowa National Guard, while Simon will serve the New Jersey National Guard. The Passing of the Stole reminds all military chaplains of their calling and their pastoral responsibility to provide religious support to service members and families. The ceremony is a tradition that represents a formal transfer of authority and responsibility from the previous State Chaplain to the new one. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Staff Sgt.
