Kelly Janos and her children, 7-year-old Teddy, 5-year-old Eleanor, 3-year-old Ophelia and 1-year-old Scarlett, match names of famous military horses with their descriptions during the Frontier Army Museum’s History with Horses event Oct. 14 at the Fort Leavenworth Stables. At the activity and learning station, participants matched photos and names with descriptions for George Washington’s primary mount Blueskin; Comanche, survivor of the 1876 Battle of Little Big Horn; Chief, known as the Army’s last cavalry mount; former racehorse Reckless who retired as a Marine sergeant in 1954; and Black Jack, the last horse issued to the Army by the Quartermaster Department and the riderless horse in more than 1,000 armed forces funerals.
