HAGÅTÑA, Guam (Oct. 26, 2022) - Student and faculty participants from Guam High School, on U.S. Naval Hospital Guam’s installation, were joined by volunteers from NAVFAC Marianas, Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), and DZSP 21 contractors for the school’s annual Pumpkin Drop, Oct. 26. This year’s Pumpkin Drop marks the return of the school tradition since 2018.

Lt. j.g. Devin Cowley led the coordination of the event and volunteered his time to teach students about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs. Students were tasked as groups to build a structurally sound container that housed a pumpkin to be dropped from a height of 50 feet. To claim success, the pumpkin was to remain completely intact. The Seabees facilitated judging of the pumpkin drop. Out of the twelve four-person groups, two were named winners: The Boo Crew and The Haydens.

The goal of the Pumpkin Drop is to generate interest in STEM and physics among DODEA students by intersecting creativity and problem solving from an engineering perspective. Lt. Cyndele McVeigh, who also volunteered at the event, said STEM is the driving force for a lot of what we see in our day-to-day lives. (U.S. Navy photo by Randall W. Ramaswamy)
