Colleen Jordan, senior project engineer, inspects a surface mining excavator at the 16/34 runway extension project on Nov. 9, 2022 at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. This piece of equipment’s bucket can hold 17 cubic yards of material alone. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Alaska District's contractor will be using a variety of other excavators, dump trucks and machinery to continue moving the mountain of dirt for this project in the years to come.
