Sgt. 1st Class Jared Doxey, a cavalry scout assigned to Headquarters & Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry Regiment, Iowa Army National Guard, carries his tribe's Eagle Staff during the Winnebago Tribe's Annual Veterans Memorial Pow Wow in 2011.

“Where I’m from, we have a warrior society. Veterans are highly regarded in our culture.”

Doxey is a member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. Like many Soldiers in the National Guard, he has a long family history of military service, spanning service in both World Wars and tours in Vietnam.

Doxey joined the Iowa National Guard in 2009 with what he described as a strong sense of duty to serve and represent his family. Soon after, he deployed to Afghanistan in 2010-2011. When he returned home, Doxey was honored in his tribe’s Annual Veterans Memorial Pow Wow. He was chosen to carry the Eagle Staff, a sacred item that represents the stature and honor of the tribe.

Last year, Doxey served on another deployment, this time in Kosovo – and his five daughters and son were there to welcome him home. For Doxey, his connection with his family, immediate and extended, is just as important as his military service. (Courtesy photo)
