A Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IIA is launched from the JS Maya against a medium-range ballistic missile target as part of Japan Flight Test Mission-07 (JFTM-07) at the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kauai, Hawaii. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA), in cooperation with the U.S. Navy, held the successful two-week missile defense event that incorporated two live-fire exercises. JFTM-07 demonstrated the capability of the SM-3 Block IIA, developed cooperatively by Japan and the U.S., to defeat medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles. This is the first time a Japanese Maya-class destroyer has fired an SM–3.
