JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Nov. 14, 2022) - Lt. Justin Underdown, a chaplain at Naval Hospital Jacksonville, speaks with a sailor in the hospital’s chapel. Underdown, a native of Mechanicsville, Virginia, says, “The Chaplain Corps has four core competencies in its mission of service; provide, facilitate, care, and advise service members and their families. Each encompasses moments of what I strive in seeking to provide pastoral and spiritual care through the lenses relating to the concept of a "ministry of presence" as "incarnational ministry." Established on Nov. 28, 1775, the Navy Chaplain Corps represents more than 100 faith groups, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism.
