Operation Christmas Drop 2022 Bundle Build attendees pose for a photo at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, Dec. 3, 2022. The first Christmas Drop happened in 1952. During a weather mission, the aircrew of a WB-29 Superfortress assigned to the 54th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron flew over the atoll of Kapingamarangi and saw the islanders waving at them. They quickly gathered some items they had, placed them in a dropsonde container, attached a parachute then dropped the cargo as they circled the island again. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt.
