Phillip Jimenez (left) and Eric Kugel (right), 66th Rescue Squadron special mission aviators (SMA), communicate with the rest of the aircrew during a combat search and rescue training mission on a HH-60W Dec. 8, 2022, at Lake Meade National Recreation Area, Nevada. SMAs conduct pre-flight inspections of aircraft systems along with placement and delivery of all cargo on board their assigned airframe. These highly trained specialists have multiple integral roles and monitor all functions for the aircraft, even providing weapon defense in order for the team to successfully complete its missions.
