36th Ohio monument near the Otto Farm. Led by Marietta, Ohio native Lt. Col. Melvin Clarke in the final attack on Sharpsburg, the regiment advanced over a series of ridges to a low spot where the troops came under a devastating fire from the enemy. While Clarke ordered his men to lie down for protection, he was killed after being struck in the right thigh by enemy fire. Ten days prior to the battle, he had been promoted to colonel, but did not receive word of the honor before he died.
