PACIFIC OCEAN (Dec. 23, 2022) - U.S. Marine Corps Col. S. Lee Meyer, right, commanding officer of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, and Marines of the 13th MEU speak to Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III aboard amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), Dec. 23, 2022. Forward-deployed, rapid-response, and integrated Navy and Marine Corps capabilities expand the options the Navy-Marine Corps team provides joint-force commanders. The 13th MEU is embarked on the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, comprised of the Makin Island and amphibious transport dock ships USS Anchorage (LPD 23) and USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26), conducting routine operations in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with Allies and partners and serves as a ready-response force to defend peace and maintain stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
