Maj. Gen. Benjamin Corell, Adjutant General of the Iowa National Guard, and his wife Beth Corell walk hand in hand after the annual Condition of the Guard address at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines, Iowa, on Jan. 12, 2023. In his address, Corell shared the story of how his wife encouraged him to join the Iowa National Guard and found his calling in life.
“With now 37 years of service, starting out as a financially challenged Iowa kid with no college education, no real direction in my life – I stand before you today as a general officer, the holder of a master’s degree...I proudly represent all the members of the Iowa National Guard as we serve the state of Iowa and our great country. I am also very proud that my three sons have followed in my footsteps as they carry on the tradition of military service in my family as members of the Iowa National Guard.” (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Staff Sgt.
